Clacton By-election Results Awaited As Nigel Farage Claims Victory

Nigel Farage has claimed victory in the Clacton by-election before the official result is declared, as counting continues after a record 34 candidates contested the Essex seat and turnout was confirmed at 44.37%.

The Clacton by-election results are still awaiting official declaration after Nigel Farage claimed he had won the Essex constituency “fairly convincingly” while votes were continuing to be counted.

Farage, the Reform UK leader, made the claim during an event away from the count in the early hours of Friday, 14 August. Tendring District Council had not declared a winner at the time of publication, meaning his assertion should not yet be treated as the official result.

The final turnout was confirmed at 44.37%, with 35,401 ballots cast. Counting is taking place at Clacton Leisure Centre after polls closed at 10pm on Thursday.

Farage also said he would not attend the declaration, claiming Essex Police had warned him about an organised attempt to disrupt the event. Acting Returning Officer Ian Davidson said officials were working closely with Essex Police and confirmed that there was no issue preventing the count from being completed.

Why the Clacton by-election Was Called?

The unusual contest was triggered when Farage resigned as Clacton MP in July and chose to stand again.

His decision followed scrutiny of a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne and a parliamentary standards investigation into whether Farage had complied with MPs’ declaration rules. Farage has denied wrongdoing. The inquiry was paused when he ceased to be an MP and could resume if he returns to the Commons.

Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Greens did not field candidates in the by-election, with the major parties criticising Farage’s decision to trigger the poll. That left him facing an unusually large field dominated by independents, smaller parties and satirical candidates.

A total of 34 candidates appeared on the ballot  a record for a UK parliamentary election, according to Tendring District Council. The previous record was understood to be 26 candidates at the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008.

Among Farage’s opponents were Count Binface, Laurence Fox, Rejoin EU candidate John Stevens and three Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidates.

The exceptionally crowded field also created practical problems for election officials. Davidson said additional staff and counting tables were needed, while the cost of printing the unusually large ballot papers was around four times that of the 2024 general election. The overall by-election was estimated to have cost about £250,000.

Farage Claims Win Before Official Clacton Result

Farage told supporters that the vote represented an endorsement of his decision to return to the electorate, but no official vote total or majority had been published when he spoke.

That distinction matters because only the Acting Returning Officer’s declaration establishes who has formally been elected as Clacton’s MP.

Farage previously won the constituency at the July 2024 general election with 21,225 votes and a majority of 8,405. This year’s contest is difficult to compare directly because the Conservatives, Labour and other major parties that competed in 2024 chose not to stand.

The confirmed turnout of 44.37% also means fewer voters participated than at the previous general election. With 35,401 ballots to divide among a record field, the full results will show not only whether Farage has returned to Parliament but also how much support the other 33 candidates attracted.

For now, the central position remains unchanged: Farage has publicly declared victory, but the Clacton by-election results will only be final when Tendring District Council’s returning officer formally announces the vote totals and elected MP.
