Meghan Markle’s UK Return Ended Without London Appearances As Security Concerns Reshaped Trip

Meghan Markle returned to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in July for the first time since 2022, but the Duchess of Sussex did not join Prince Harry’s public engagements in London after security concerns disrupted the family’s original plans.

Meghan Markle’s long-awaited UK return ultimately became a largely private family visit, despite earlier expectations that she could appear alongside Prince Harry at several engagements.

The Duchess of Sussex, 45, travelled to England with seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet during Harry’s July visit. However, Meghan and the children stayed away from his public programme as questions over their security arrangements continued.

Harry had arrived in London before his family and carried out a series of engagements connected with his charities and the build-up to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

His first official engagement of the visit was at Chatham House in London on 7 July, where he attended an Invictus Games Foundation discussion focused on wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. Meghan was not present.

Sources subsequently told People that Meghan had intended to support her husband at several appearances but that the changing security situation prevented the visit from unfolding as expected.

One source described sadness over the way the week had developed, while another said the public disagreement surrounding arrangements would have been embarrassing for the Duchess. Those comments were attributed to unnamed sources rather than Meghan herself.

Security Concerns Changed the Sussexes’ Plans

Harry has repeatedly raised concerns about protection for his family when visiting Britain since the Duke and Duchess stepped back from working royal duties in 2020.

Ahead of July’s visit, his spokesperson said the issue was whether suitable security could be provided throughout the trip rather than simply whether the family had a secure place to stay. King Charles had offered accommodation on a royal estate, but protection available there would not necessarily extend to the Sussexes when travelling elsewhere.

The uncertainty initially led to confirmation that Meghan, Archie and Lilibet would not accompany Harry during the London section of his programme.

They nevertheless travelled to England later in the week, allowing the family to hold a private reunion with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire on 10 July. It was the children’s first visit to Britain since 2022 and Meghan’s first return since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral that September.

No photographs or details of the Highgrove meeting were released, keeping the reunion out of the public programme that surrounded Harry’s trip.

The family also spent time at Althorp, the Northamptonshire estate where Princess Diana grew up and is buried. Meghan later included a photograph of Harry, Archie and Lilibet walking through the grounds carrying flowers in a social-media post documenting the family’s summer travels.

Further UK Visits Are Already Being Discussed

The July trip may not be the last time Harry is seen regularly in Britain.

Reporting published on 17 August said the Duke intends to increase the frequency of his UK visits, potentially returning every few months as he works with British charities and prepares for the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July 2027.

Whether those trips will also bring Meghan, Archie and Lilibet back to Britain remains unresolved. Security and privacy continue to be cited as central considerations, and no decision has been announced on whether they will accompany Harry on his expected next visit.

For London, that leaves a notable distinction after July’s closely watched return: Harry resumed a visible programme of engagements in the capital, while Meghan’s first trip back to Britain in nearly four years remained almost entirely private.
