Covent Garden Stabbing: Two Men Remain In Hospital After Four Injured

Two of the four men stabbed on Endell Street have been discharged, while two remain in hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. A 47-year-old woman was arrested after police recovered a pair of scissors.

Two men remained in hospital after four people were stabbed near Covent Garden in central London on Wednesday, 5 August, according to the latest confirmed update.

The Metropolitan Police said the victims,  men aged 34, 39, 42 and 52, were found with stab wounds following the Covent Garden incident on Endell Street. Two were later discharged, while the injuries suffered by the other two were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A 47-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and possessing an offensive weapon. Police said officers recovered a pair of scissors at the scene, while the woman remained in custody during the latest published update.

The incident happened around lunchtime on Endell Street, in the London Borough of Camden, close to the Shaftesbury Theatre and about a quarter of a mile from Covent Garden’s main piazza. The street runs through a busy part of the West End containing theatres, restaurants and other businesses.

London Ambulance Service said it was called at 12.29pm and sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast-response car and an incident response officer. London’s Air Ambulance was also dispatched, although all four patients were taken to a major trauma centre by road.

Early reports referred to three stabbing victims, but police subsequently revised the total and confirmed that four men had been injured. The clarification explains the differing numbers carried in initial reports as emergency services continued assessing patients at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in the area, said officers responded within minutes after receiving several reports. He said the investigation was still at an early stage but that police currently believed it was an isolated incident related to mental health concerns.

Witnesses described people running from the area as officers arrived. Arjan Gjorga, a restaurant manager working nearby, said the victims appeared to have been selected at random and that police responded immediately. Another witness reported seeing a confrontation between a woman and officers before the arrest.

A police cordon was established while emergency crews treated the injured men and officers gathered evidence. The area was reported to be calm and the cordon had been removed by about 3.30pm, allowing businesses and pedestrians to resume normal activity.

Police said a visible presence would remain in the neighbourhood during the initial investigation. The latest published update said the arrested woman was still in custody, with no further decision on the case announced at that stage.
