Kim Min-jae will captain Bayern Munich on home soil as Vincent Kompany fields a heavily rotated starting XI against Jeju SK, with Luis Díaz, Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah among the substitutes.
Bayern Munich have named South Korean defender Kim Min-jae as captain for their pre-season friendly against Jeju SK at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Tuesday, 4 August.
The Jeju vs Bayern match begins at 12pm BST, or 8pm local time, and forms the first fixture of Bayern’s 2026 Audi Summer Tour. Vincent Kompany has selected a mixture of senior players and young prospects, while several established internationals begin on the bench.
Jonas Urbig starts in goal behind a back four of Hiroki Ito, Kim, Felipe Pavic and Vincent Manuba. João Palhinha partners Bara Sapoko Ndiaye in midfield, with Tom Bischof, Felipe Chávez and Giuseppe Della Rovere supporting striker Bassala Sambou Assomo.
Luis Díaz, Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Sacha Boey, Konrad Laimer, Aleksandar Pavlović and Josip Stanišić are among the substitutes. Manuel Neuer has not been included in the matchday line-up, leaving Urbig and Sven Ulreich as Bayern’s listed goalkeepers.
Kim Min-jae Handed Captain’s Armband In South Korea
Kim’s selection as captain provides the central storyline of Bayern’s visit to Jeju. The South Korea international starts alongside Ito, another experienced Bundesliga defender, but the rest of Kompany’s team contains several players seeking to establish themselves during pre-season.
Bayern arrived on the island with a 26-player touring party and were greeted by hundreds of supporters at Jeju International Airport. Kim, Díaz, Kimmich and Neuer were among the prominent members of the squad welcomed by local fans.
Jeju manager Sérgio Costa has previously worked with Kim during his time on South Korea’s coaching staff. Before the game, Costa praised the defender’s qualities and said he was looking forward to seeing him play in front of a home crowd.
Kompany said Bayern’s staggered return from the World Cup and injury rehabilitation had created a selection “puzzle”. Several senior players are being reintegrated gradually, making the Jeju friendly an opportunity to assess younger members of the touring squad alongside Palhinha, Ito and Kim.
Jeju Name Two Strikers in 4-4-2 Formation
Jeju will start in a 4-4-2 formation under Costa. Heo Ja-woong is in goal, with Kwon Ki-min, Kim Jae-woo, Chung Woon and Jo In-jung forming the defence.
Captain Lee Chang-min starts in midfield with Jang Min-gyu, Choi Byung-wook and Park Min-jae. Matheus Aiás and Ermir Çinari lead the attack, while former Portugal international defender Tobias Figueiredo is among Jeju’s substitutes.
The South Korean side enter the match midway through their domestic campaign rather than at the beginning of pre-season. Jeju were seventh in the K League after 21 matches and had gone six games unbeaten following the World Cup break, recording two wins and four draws.
Kompany watched Jeju’s 3-3 draw with Incheon United at the same stadium shortly before the friendly. He highlighted the intensity of the match, the teams’ tactical organisation and the importance of set pieces despite the difficult heat.
The fixture is Bayern’s first pre-season meeting with top-flight opposition this summer. Their Asian tour continues against Aston Villa at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium on Friday, 7 August, before competitive football begins against Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on 22 August.
