Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has attracted fresh attention after meeting Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai for afternoon tea at Claridge’s in Mayfair, London, with the pair subsequently announcing a charitable collaboration supporting girls’ education around the world.
The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, marked one of Meghan’s first public appearances in the capital since returning to Britain with Prince Harry and their two children earlier this year.
Photographs and social media footage showed the Duchess, 45, and Malala, 29, enjoying a private conversation inside the luxury hotel’s famous Foyer and Reading Room. The two women were also photographed embracing outside Claridge’s before leaving separately.
Although the encounter initially appeared to be a social reunion between friends, its wider significance became clear four days later when Meghan announced a fundraising initiative involving her lifestyle brand As Ever, Archewell Philanthropies and the Malala Fund.
On Sunday, 11 October, coinciding with the International Day of the Girl, Meghan and Malala shared photographs of themselves sitting together over afternoon tea, surrounded by traditional scones, jam and other refreshments.
The joint Instagram announcement stated that 100% of net proceeds from sales of As Ever jams and teas on International Day of the Girl would support the Malala Fund’s work to improve access to education.
The two women declared:
“When we support the girls of today, we empower the women of tomorrow.”
Their message emphasised that access to education remains fundamental to achieving greater opportunities and equality for women.
The charitable commitment offered a new explanation for the high-profile London meeting, although a source familiar with the relationship had previously described the occasion to People magazine as a friendly catch-up.
The appearance was particularly notable because Meghan has maintained a relatively low public profile since relocating to the United Kingdom in late August.
For the Claridge’s visit, the Duchess wore wide-legged white Ralph Lauren trousers, a white top and a camel-coloured coat, accompanied by a black quilted Chanel handbag. Malala opted for a neutral-toned outfit with a beige jacket and a coordinated headscarf.
Their conversation was initially captured by another hotel guest and circulated online, drawing considerable interest because of the women’s international profiles and their established commitment to female empowerment.
However, this was not the first occasion on which Meghan and Malala had worked together.
In October 2020, Malala joined Meghan and Prince Harry for a virtual conversation marking the International Day of the Girl.
The discussion focused on barriers preventing girls from attending school, including poverty, discrimination and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Following that conversation, Malala expressed her shared outlook with Meghan, saying that when girls have access to education, everyone wins.
The renewed association in London therefore builds upon a relationship established several years earlier rather than representing an entirely new connection between the two public figures.
What Have Royal Commentators Said About Meghan’s Meeting With Malala?
The Claridge’s appearance has also prompted discussion among royal commentators about Meghan’s evolving public role following her return to Britain.
Writing in The Independent on 9 October, journalist Helen Coffey examined how Meghan’s friendships and public engagements contribute to her wider image.
Coffey suggested that the Duchess has consistently demonstrated an ability to manage her public profile through carefully considered associations, writing:
“Nothing is by accident.”
Her commentary suggested that reconnecting with Malala, an internationally respected education campaigner, could reinforce Meghan’s association with humanitarian causes.
In a separate analysis published on 12 October, The Independent columnist Charlotte Cripps examined the relationship between the Duchess’s commercial activities and charitable ambitions.
Cripps described Meghan as:
“the ultimate millennial sales machine”
Her assessment raised questions about how Meghan’s lifestyle business and philanthropy increasingly operate alongside each other, particularly as As Ever expands its range of products.
These observations represent the commentators’ interpretations of Meghan’s public strategy rather than confirmed explanations of her private intentions.
Beyond the royal commentary, Malala Fund’s own leadership has highlighted why support for girls’ education remains urgent.
Nabila Aguele, chief executive of Malala Fund, wrote in the organisation’s 2026 annual report, published on 6 October, that:
“girls’ education is one of the most consequential investments any government or donor can make.”
Aguele also highlighted the economic and social consequences of inadequate access to secondary education, arguing that educational opportunities influence economic growth, employment, financial inclusion and health outcomes.
The organisation estimates that more than 122 million girls worldwide remain out of school, with poverty, conflict, discriminatory policies and early marriage among the obstacles affecting access to education.
Malala Fund campaigns to ensure that girls can access and complete 12 years of schooling, working with local organisations and advocates to influence education policies and funding.
Meghan’s fundraising initiative therefore connects her commercial brand with an organisation already undertaking international education advocacy.
Nevertheless, the precise financial impact of the As Ever promotion remains uncertain.
The initial announcement did not disclose how much money the one-day initiative was expected to raise, and the pledge concerned net proceeds rather than the full retail value of each product sold.
The collaboration also comes at a significant moment for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
After spending six years primarily based in California, Meghan and Prince Harry returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in August 2026, while maintaining their American residence.
Their move has generated renewed speculation about the couple’s professional direction, charitable interests and relationship with the wider Royal Family.
While Harry has resumed appearances connected to longstanding initiatives such as the Invictus Games and WellChild, Meghan has increasingly appeared in public settings associated with her business activities, personal friendships and support for women and families.
The couple are now expected to undertake their first joint public engagement since their return on Thursday, 15 October, with a scheduled visit to Nottingham.
The planned visit carries particular significance because Nottingham was the location of one of Harry and Meghan’s first official joint appearances following their engagement announcement in November 2017.
According to reporting on their upcoming engagement, the couple intend to reconnect with organisations supporting young people and local communities, including the Hubb Community Kitchen, the Community Recording Studio and Epic Partners.
For Meghan, the meeting with Malala represents another visible step towards rebuilding connections with British charitable organisations and international campaigners.

It also highlights the growing overlap between her philanthropic work and As Ever, which markets products including fruit spreads, teas and homeware.
For Malala, whose activism has focused on the rights of girls and young women since surviving a Taliban assassination attempt in Pakistan in 2012, the partnership provides another opportunity to draw international attention to educational inequality.
While the fashionable setting of Claridge’s and the Duchess’s return to London generated much of the initial publicity, the charitable announcement has placed girls’ education at the centre of the story.
The longer-term significance of the meeting will depend on the results of the fundraising initiative and whether the two women develop further projects together.
For now, their reunion has brought together two internationally recognised campaigners at one of London’s most famous hotels, turning a private afternoon tea into a widely discussed charitable announcement.
