The award-winning Stranger Things prequel remains at the Phoenix Theatre until December 2026, giving West End audiences a final summer to discover what happened in Hawkins before the Netflix series began.

Stranger Things live on stage is heading into its final summer at London’s Phoenix Theatre, where the supernatural prequel Stranger Things: The First Shadow is booking until 27 December 2026.

The production has been running on Charing Cross Road since November 2023, transforming the story’s small Indiana town into a large-scale West End spectacle built around theatrical effects, suspense and familiar characters from the Netflix series. The official production describes 2026 as audiences’ “final summer to visit Hawkins”.

Rather than retelling events already seen on screen, The First Shadow travels back to Hawkins in 1959. Jim Hopper is still a schoolboy, Joyce Maldonado is planning her escape from the town and Bob Newby is struggling to make people take his radio show seriously.

Their seemingly ordinary lives begin to change when Henry Creel arrives with his family. Anyone familiar with the television series will recognise the importance of that name, but the play is designed as a standalone story, exploring how the darkness surrounding Hawkins began to take hold.

A Stranger Things Story Made for the Theatre

The production comes from Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions. Kate Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer on the television series, wrote the play and developed its original story with Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer and playwright Jack Thorne. Stephen Daldry directs alongside co-director Justin Martin.

Its West End success has rested partly on the way it uses the stage rather than trying to recreate television scene by scene. Lighting, sound, illusions and physical effects are used to bring the unsettling world of Hawkins into the auditorium, while the story gives more time to characters whose histories were only partly explored on screen.

The production has won two Olivier Awards, including Best Entertainment, and has attracted strong reviews for its technical ambition and ability to expand the Stranger Things mythology without simply repeating it.

The listed London cast includes Paddy Bever as Henry Creel, Adam Wadsworth as James Hopper Jr, Edie Wright as Joyce Maldonado and Max Potter as Bob Newby. Avril Maponga plays Patty Newby, a character created for the stage story, while Stewart Clarke appears as Dr Brenner.

The show runs for approximately three hours, including an interval. It is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over; children under five are not admitted, while those under 16 must attend with an adult. The production includes loud noises, gunfire audio, explosions, smoke, haze, flashing lights, strobe effects, strong language and depictions of mental health conditions.

The Phoenix Theatre is at Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0JP. Tottenham Court Road is the closest Underground station, around a two-minute walk away, while Leicester Square and Covent Garden stations are also nearby.

With the London engagement due to finish after Christmas, this summer offers one of the last opportunities to experience Hawkins in the West End before the production’s scheduled final performance.
