Prince Harry has travelled back to the US for the first time since relocating his family to Britain, beginning a packed New York schedule that included speeches on artificial intelligence, responsible travel and young people, as well as an event honouring the legacy of Princess Diana.
The Duke of Sussex arrived in New York on 22 September 2026, less than a month after he, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet returned to Britain on 26 August following six years primarily based in California.
Harry’s return to America does not currently appear to represent another change of residence. The Sussexes have retained their Montecito home and have previously been expected to maintain links with the US while establishing their new family life in Britain.
Instead, the trip has quickly developed into a concentrated series of engagements connected with some of Harry’s longstanding causes.
On Wednesday, 23 September, the 42-year-old appeared at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York, his second appearance at the event after previously taking part in 2024.
Reuters photographs confirmed Harry speaking at the gathering in New York City.
His central message focused on the effect that artificial intelligence, social media and rapidly developing technology can have on children.
Harry told the audience that he approached the issue “as a father”, referring to conversations he has had with families who say their children suffered serious harm connected with technology and social-media platforms.
The subject is closely connected with work previously undertaken by Harry and Meghan through their charitable organisation, including initiatives supporting families affected by online harms.
Harry’s speech briefly ran into an unusually appropriate technical problem when his teleprompter malfunctioned.
He left the stage before returning around 40 minutes later, reportedly joking that “AI got into my speech”, before completing his address.
Why Has Prince Harry Travelled Back to the US?
The New York visit had been planned rather than representing an unexpected return to America.
Harry’s participation in the Clinton Global Initiative had been announced earlier in September, shortly after the Sussex family relocated to Britain.
The annual meeting took place during the period surrounding the United Nations General Assembly and brought together figures discussing issues including technology, climate resilience and global health.
His schedule then expanded beyond the Clinton event.

Harry also appeared at the Skift Global Forum, where his comments centred on tourism and the responsibilities that come with international travel.
During the discussion, he referred to the extensive travelling he carried out during his years representing the Royal Family and spoke about how experiences in places including Botswana changed the way he thought about communities commonly described simply as tourist destinations.
That was followed by an appearance at a National Geographic and De Beers Okavango Eternal event, reflecting Harry’s longstanding interest in conservation in southern Africa.
His New York schedule continued on Thursday, 24 September, when he made a surprise appearance at an event organised by The Diana Award, the organisation established in memory of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
The appearance meant that Harry’s first American visit since leaving California was centred largely around the charitable and campaigning work he intends to continue independently of the Royal Family.
It also underlines an important distinction in the Sussexes’ new circumstances.
Harry and Meghan have returned to Britain, but that does not mean their professional and charitable activity will now be confined to the UK.
Their commercial relationships, charities, friends and property connections built during their years in California remain significant.
Londoner previously reported how the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle UK move represents a change in where the family is living rather than a return to their former positions as working royals.
King Charles has separately reiterated that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the Royal Family, meaning their appearances and charitable projects are undertaken privately rather than on behalf of the monarch.
Why Did Meghan Markle Stay in Britain?
Meghan did not accompany Harry for his first US trip following the family’s relocation.
Reports surrounding the visit indicate that she remained in Britain, where the couple’s children are settling into school and the family is establishing its new routine.
Harry had similarly undertaken several recent British engagements without Meghan.
On 21 September, just before travelling to America, he appeared alone at the WellChild Awards in London, one of the charitable events with which he has maintained a longstanding connection.
Days earlier, Harry had spoken publicly for the first time since the family’s return, describing the preceding weeks as “eventful” while saying his family was happy and the children were at school.
The Sussexes therefore appear, at least in the early stages of their return, to be operating a flexible model in which Harry can travel internationally for his established commitments while Meghan and the children maintain their base in Britain.
There is currently no verified indication that Harry’s New York visit reverses the family’s decision to return to the UK.
Royal Experts Had Already Expected Harry’s New UK Life to Develop Gradually
Royal observers analysing Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain had cautioned against interpreting individual appearances as evidence that the couple were moving back towards formal royal duties.
Dr Craig Prescott, a constitutional law lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London, told the Associated Press that if Harry wanted to rebuild his public presence in Britain, he would need to move “slowly and deliberately”.
Prescott suggested that Harry’s established charitable work, including the Invictus Games and WellChild, provided an obvious route for maintaining a consistent public role without re-entering the institutional Royal Family.
That assessment now has additional relevance.
Harry spent the weeks after his return undertaking charity engagements in Britain before travelling independently to New York for causes that have increasingly defined his post-royal public work.
Peter Hunt, the former BBC royal correspondent, has separately argued that Harry’s return to Britain gives him greater opportunity to rebuild his personal relationship with his father while potentially changing the dynamics surrounding his relationship with other members of the Royal Family.
Those are interpretations rather than confirmation of what will happen next, particularly because there has been no announcement of a reconciliation with Prince William or any move towards restoring Harry’s former official role.
The Palace position remains clearer: Harry and Meghan are private individuals rather than working representatives of the monarch.
US Trip Comes While Harry’s UK Security Is Being Reassessed
The international travel also comes during an important period for Harry’s security arrangements.
Following the Sussexes’ move back to Britain, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, agreed to reconsider the security position applying to Harry and Meghan in light of their changed circumstances.
The review does not itself mean permanent taxpayer-funded police protection has been restored.
Security has been one of the biggest issues surrounding Harry’s relationship with Britain for several years.
After losing a legal challenge in 2025, Harry said he could not then envisage bringing his wife and children permanently back to the UK under the arrangements available to him.
Their relocation in August 2026 has fundamentally changed that situation.
Londoner has previously examined the wider Prince Harry UK security dispute, including questions surrounding RAVEC assessments and the notice provided before the Sussex family’s return.
Harry’s New York visit does not alter that process, but it demonstrates how frequently the Duke may continue to travel while establishing Britain as his family’s principal base.
What Does Prince Harry’s US Return Mean Now?
For now, the most significant aspect of Prince Harry travelling back to the US is not that he has returned to his former American life, but that the trip offers an early picture of how his new arrangement could work.
Harry can live with Meghan and their children in Britain while continuing engagements in the United States and elsewhere.
Within roughly 48 hours in New York, he addressed the Clinton Global Initiative, discussed sustainable tourism at the Skift Global Forum, attended an Okavango conservation event and joined a Diana Award programme.
That schedule suggests his post-California life will still have a substantial international dimension.
At the same time, Meghan remaining in Britain with Archie and Lilibet reinforces the distinction between a temporary American working trip and another family relocation.
The Sussexes still have significant ties to California, but their children are now attending school in Britain,
Harry has restarted a programme of UK-based charitable engagements and the family’s security arrangements are being reassessed on the basis of their renewed British residence.
Prince Harry’s first journey back across the Atlantic therefore appears less like a reversal of the family’s move and more like the first major test of a new transatlantic life one centred in Britain but still closely connected to the United States.
