Image Policy

Londoner uses artificial intelligence-generated images to support some of its articles, category pages and other editorial content.

This policy explains how these images are created, how they should be understood and the permissions available to people who wish to reuse them.

Which Images Are AI-Generated?

Unless an individual image is credited to a photographer, news agency, organisation or another third party, images identified by Londoner as AI-generated have been created using generative artificial intelligence tools.

AI-generated images may include:

  • Editorial illustrations
  • Representations of news topics
  • Lifestyle and business scenes
  • London-related visual concepts
  • Generic people and locations
  • Visuals created to support explanatory content

AI-generated images are used for illustrative purposes. They should not automatically be interpreted as photographic evidence of an event, location, person or situation described in an article.

Where an image relates to a public figure, significant event, crime, accident or sensitive news story, Londoner aims to label it clearly as an AI-generated illustration where necessary to prevent confusion.

Can Londoner’s AI Images Be Reused?

Londoner releases its eligible AI-generated images under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.

To the extent that Londoner owns or controls any copyright or related rights in these images, Londoner waives those rights as fully as legally permitted.

Eligible images may therefore be:

  • Downloaded and copied
  • Republished on websites
  • Used in print publications
  • Modified, cropped or adapted
  • Used for personal projects
  • Used for educational purposes
  • Used commercially
  • Shared on social media

Permission does not need to be requested, and attribution to Londoner is not required. However, a voluntary credit such as “AI-generated image via Londoner” is appreciated.

Which Materials Are Not Covered?

This permission applies only to images that:

  1. Were generated for Londoner using artificial intelligence;
  2. Are owned or controlled by Londoner; and
  3. Are not accompanied by a separate copyright notice or third-party credit.

This policy does not grant permission to reuse:

  • Photographs supplied by news agencies or photographers
  • Images reproduced from government bodies or other publications
  • Screenshots of websites, applications or social media posts
  • Company names, product packaging or third-party branding
  • Embedded videos or social media content
  • Londoner’s logo, name or brand identity
  • Article text and other written editorial content
  • Images carrying a separate licence or copyright notice

Users should check the image caption, credit and surrounding article information before reusing an image.

Third-Party Rights and Responsible Use

The CC0 dedication applies only to copyright and related rights that Londoner may hold. It does not override other applicable laws or third-party rights.

Anyone reusing an image remains responsible for ensuring that the intended use complies with laws concerning trademarks, privacy, publicity rights, passing off, defamation, misleading advertising and other legal obligations.

An image must not be presented in a way that falsely suggests:

  • Londoner endorses a person, organisation, product or campaign;
  • An illustrative scene is a photograph of a real event;
  • A person depicted committed a crime or participated in an incident;
  • An AI-generated individual is a genuine witness, victim, suspect or public official;
  • Londoner created or approved a modified version.

Londoner makes eligible AI-generated images available on an “as is” basis and does not guarantee that every image is suitable for every intended use.

Reporting an Image Concern

Londoner takes concerns about misleading, inappropriate or potentially infringing images seriously.

Anyone who believes an image contains protected material, has been labelled incorrectly or creates a misleading impression may contact the editorial team.
