Cameron Norrie Ends Six-Match Losing Streak With Emphatic Los Cabos Win

Cameron Norrie has secured his first tour-level victory since April, defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets at a Mexican tournament carrying special significance for the British player.

Cameron Norrie ended a six-match losing streak with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos.

The British number two recovered from losing his opening service game to complete the win in one hour and 22 minutes, advancing to the last 16 of the ATP 250 tournament. It was his first tour-level victory since April and a welcome change in form after a difficult three-month spell.

Norrie, the fifth seed and world number 39, immediately broke back after his poor start and gradually took control of the opening set. He then dominated the second as Kovacevic struggled to protect his serve and committed seven double faults.

The 30-year-old won five of his 11 break-point opportunities and claimed 64 per cent of the points played on Kovacevic’s second serve. He also won 78 per cent of the points behind his own first delivery, despite landing only 54 per cent of first serves.

Familiar Surroundings Revive Norrie

Los Cabos has played an important part in Norrie’s career. He won his first ATP Tour title at the Mexican event in 2021 and has now recorded 12 match victories at the tournament, more than at any other tour-level venue apart from Indian Wells.

The result also represented his first victory over Kovacevic. Norrie had lost their two previous meetings, including an opening-round contest in Los Cabos in 2023, while the American returned this year after reaching the tournament final in 2025.

Norrie acknowledged after the match that recent injuries and declining confidence had affected his performances.

“I hadn’t had a win in a while. I had been battling some injuries and some confidence,” he said during his on-court interview, adding that he remained calm despite feeling nervous.

His last victory had come during the spring clay-court season. Norrie later lost to world number one Jannik Sinner in the Madrid Open fourth round before enduring a run of defeats that continued into the grass-court campaign.

That sequence included a painful first-round Wimbledon exit in London on 29 June. The former semi-finalist twice led Michael Zheng by a set but was beaten in a final-set tie-break after a five-set match on the opening day at the All England Club.

Hard-court Campaign Offers Chance to Rebuild

The Los Cabos victory gives Norrie an opportunity to rebuild momentum at the beginning of the North American hard-court swing, with the US Open due to follow the major warm-up tournaments in August.

He will next face either Australian James Duckworth or American qualifier Aidan Mayo. The second round is scheduled as part of Wednesday’s programme, before the quarter-finals begin on Thursday and the final is played on Saturday, 1 August.

Norrie’s immediate task will be to turn one encouraging performance into a sustained recovery. The manner of the victory, particularly his response to being broken in the first game and his control of the second set, offered evidence that the familiar conditions in Los Cabos may again bring out his best tennis.
