Most eligible people should receive their Winter Fuel Payment in November or December 2026. Before the money arrives, the DWP usually sends a letter in October or November confirming the payment amount and bank account.

The payment is not sent to everyone on the same day. Different pensioners may receive it at different points during November or December, so it is normal for one person to be paid earlier than another.

For winter 2026 to 2027, the payment can be worth between £100 and £300, depending on age and household circumstances. If an expected payment has still not arrived by 27 January 2027, the DWP advises contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

What Month Do I Get My Winter Fuel Payment In 2026?

The main Winter Fuel Payment months are November and December 2026.

There is no single nationwide payment date. Payments are processed over several weeks, meaning one household may receive its money in early November while another may not receive it until later in December.

The important dates are:

Winter Fuel Payment Stage Date
Qualifying Week 21 to 27 September 2026
Payment Letters October or November 2026
Most Payments November or December 2026
Contact DWP If Still Unpaid After 27 January 2027

Receiving your payment later than someone else does not automatically mean there is a problem. The DWP confirms that most eligible people are paid automatically during November or December.

When Will I Get My Winter Fuel Payment Letter?

Eligible people should normally receive their Winter Fuel Payment letter in October or November 2026.

The letter should confirm:

  • How Much You Will Receive
  • Which Bank Account Will Receive The Payment

The money will normally be sent to the same account used for your State Pension or other benefits.

Receiving the letter does not mean the payment will arrive immediately. There may still be several days or weeks between the letter arriving and the money entering your account.

Who Is Eligible For Winter Fuel Payment In 2026?

For winter 2026 to 2027, you can generally qualify if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Your circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026 are important because they can affect both your eligibility and the amount you receive.

You may not qualify in certain circumstances, including if you were in prison throughout the qualifying week or if immigration conditions prevent you from accessing public funds.

Different rules can also apply to some people living in care homes.

People living in Scotland are covered by the separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment rather than the DWP Winter Fuel Payment scheme.

How Much Winter Fuel Payment Will I Get?

The Winter Fuel Payment for 2026 to 2027 can be worth between £100 and £300.

If you live alone, or nobody else in your household qualifies, the main rates are:

Date Of Birth Payment
28 September 1946 To 27 June 1960 £200
Before 28 September 1946 £300

If you live with another eligible person, the amount may be divided between you.

For example, two eligible people in the younger age group can receive £100 each, while higher amounts can apply where one or both people were born before 28 September 1946.

Your DWP letter should confirm the exact amount you are due.

What Happens If My Income Is Over £35,000?

The current Winter Fuel Payment system includes a £35,000 individual income threshold.

If your annual income is over £35,000, you can still receive the payment, but HMRC will normally recover an equivalent amount through the tax system.

The threshold applies to individual income, rather than the combined income of a couple.

HMRC can usually recover the amount by:

  • Adjusting Your PAYE Tax Code
  • Including The Charge In Your Self Assessment

This means someone can receive the Winter Fuel Payment into their bank account first and later have the same amount recovered through tax.

Certain people receiving means-tested benefits, including Pension Credit, can be exempt from this charge.

Do I Need To Apply For Winter Fuel Payment?

Most eligible people do not need to apply because the payment is normally made automatically.

This is usually the case if the DWP already has the information it needs through your State Pension or other benefits.

Some people may still need to make a claim, particularly if they have not received Winter Fuel Payment before and do not receive payments that allow the DWP to process it automatically.

If you believe you qualify but do not receive a letter during October or November, check whether you need to make a claim rather than assuming the payment will arrive automatically.

You should also make sure your address and bank details are up to date.

Can I Opt Out Of Winter Fuel Payment?

Yes. Eligible people can choose to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment.

This may be useful for someone whose income is above £35,000 and who does not want to receive the payment before HMRC later recovers it.

Opting out does not affect your State Pension.

However, you do not have to opt out simply because your income is above the threshold. If you receive the payment, HMRC can handle the recovery through PAYE or Self Assessment where the charge applies.

Why Has My Winter Fuel Payment Not Arrived?

If your payment has not arrived during November, it may simply still be being processed.

The normal payment period continues throughout December 2026.

Before reporting a missing payment, check:

  • Your Winter Fuel Payment Letter
  • Your Usual State Pension Or Benefits Account
  • Whether Your Bank Details Have Changed
  • Whether You Needed To Make A Claim
  • Whether Your Household Circumstances Changed

If you have not received your expected payment by 27 January 2027, you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Does Winter Fuel Payment Affect My Other Benefits?

Winter Fuel Payment does not normally reduce your other benefits.

It is also separate from other winter support schemes such as the Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payments.

Each scheme has its own eligibility rules, so qualifying for Winter Fuel Payment does not automatically mean you will receive every other form of winter energy support.

What Should You Expect From Winter Fuel Payment In 2026?

The main point for eligible pensioners is that most Winter Fuel Payments should arrive in November or December 2026.

Letters should generally arrive beforehand in October or November, while the qualifying week runs from 21 to 27 September 2026.

Payment amounts range from £100 to £300, depending mainly on age and household circumstances.

People with individual income over £35,000 should also be aware that HMRC may later recover the payment through the tax system.

If neither the letter nor the expected payment has arrived by 27 January 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre to check the status.
