Heathrow Engineer Death: Investigation Launched After Virgin Atlantic Technician Dies

The Metropolitan Police and Health and Safety Executive are investigating the death of 23-year-old aircraft engineer Georgie Buxton following a maintenance incident at Heathrow Airport.
A Virgin Atlantic aircraft engineer has died after suffering serious injuries while carrying out maintenance work at Heathrow Airport.
Georgie Buxton, 23, was injured while working on an aircraft on 11 June. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and died on 7 July, according to the Metropolitan Police.
The force is conducting a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive, which is responsible for examining serious workplace incidents and determining whether health and safety laws may have been breached.
Police said officers attended Heathrow alongside the London Ambulance Service after receiving reports that a man had been injured while undertaking aircraft maintenance.
Buxton’s family is being supported by specialist officers. An inquest is also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Cause of Heathrow Maintenance Incident Not Confirmed

Reports have suggested Buxton was working on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner when equipment or machinery fell during maintenance work. However, the precise sequence of events and the cause of his injuries have not been publicly confirmed by investigators.
The joint inquiry is expected to consider the equipment being used, the maintenance procedures in place and whether any mechanical, operational or workplace safety issues contributed to the incident.
No criminal offence or safety breach has been established.
Virgin Atlantic said it was “heartbroken” to confirm that a much-loved member of its engineering team had died.
The airline said: “Our thoughts are firmly with Georgie’s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues at this incredibly sad and challenging time.”
It added that it was supporting those affected and working closely with the relevant authorities and the aircraft manufacturer to establish the facts.
“The safety and wellbeing of our people is always our top priority, and we are devastated by this incident,” the company said.
Virgin Atlantic declined to provide further details while the investigation remains under way and asked that Buxton’s family be given privacy.
Heathrow Airport also expressed its condolences to his relatives, friends and colleagues across the airline.
Inquest Will Examine How Georgie Buxton Died
An inquest is due to be opened into Buxton’s death. The coronial process will formally establish his identity and determine when, where and how he died.
An opening hearing is usually brief and may be adjourned while police and workplace safety investigations continue. The final inquest may not take place until investigators have gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses and examined relevant equipment and maintenance records.
An inquest does not decide criminal responsibility or civil liability. Any decision about further action would be taken separately by the police, prosecutors or the Health and Safety Executive after the available evidence has been reviewed.
Buxton had worked for Virgin Atlantic for around two years and described himself professionally as a dedicated worker with a strong passion for aircraft engineering.
The incident has affected colleagues within the airline’s engineering operation, with the company describing him as a valued and much-loved member of the team.
No completion date has been announced for the joint investigation. Until the police, safety regulator and coroner conclude their inquiries, the exact cause of the Heathrow maintenance incident remains unconfirmed.
