The beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally is attracting fresh attention this October, with a special London cinema screening, a new US streaming release and renewed appreciation for the film that helped define modern romantic comedies.

Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, the 1989 classic remains a favourite more than 37 years after its original release. Directed by the late Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron, the film explores whether men and women can remain friends without romantic feelings complicating their relationship.

The latest revival comes as Paramount+ adds the film to its October 2026 catalogue in the United States, while London audiences prepare for an intimate screening in Bermondsey on 16 October.

The film’s autumnal New York setting, memorable dialogue and central performances have helped establish it as a seasonal favourite, particularly among viewers revisiting classic romantic comedies.

When Harry Met Sally Gets a Special London Screening?

London film enthusiasts will have an opportunity to experience When Harry Met Sally on the big screen when Wilderlight Cinema hosts a special screening at The Old Timber Store on Maltby Street, Bermondsey, on Friday, 16 October 2026.

The event, scheduled to begin at 7pm, will take place inside a candlelit venue beneath the railway arches, with approximately 60 seats available.

Organisers have arranged a live jazz trio, a New York deli-inspired food offering and refreshments designed to reflect the atmosphere of the original film.

The event listing advertises standard tickets at £45 and VIP admission at £60, although prices and availability may change.

The screening offers London audiences something different from a conventional cinema visit, recreating elements of the film’s New York atmosphere in one of the capital’s distinctive cultural spaces.

Meanwhile, Paramount+ officially included When Harry Met Sally among its US film additions for 1 October 2026.

For British audiences watching at home, UK streaming listings also identify MGM+ through Amazon Prime Video Channels as an option, alongside digital rentals and purchases through services including Amazon, Apple TV and Sky Store.

Why Critics Still Consider When Harry Met Sally a Romantic Comedy Classic?

The film continues to receive strong critical recognition. Rotten Tomatoes currently records a 90% critics’ score based on 146 reviews, alongside an 89% audience score from more than 250,000 ratings.

Renowned film critic Roger Ebert praised the relationship at the centre of the story in his original review, writing:

“They fight happiness every step of the way, until it finally wears them down.”

His assessment captured a defining feature of the film: rather than relying entirely on dramatic romantic gestures, the story develops through conversations, disagreements, emotional uncertainty and the gradual evolution of friendship.

British film critic Pam Cook also examined the picture’s emotional complexity in a review republished by the British Film Institute in December 2025.

She observed that “a certain melancholy overshadows both its humour and its romanticism”, highlighting how the film balances comedy with the disappointments and complications of adult relationships.

These observations help explain why the movie remains relevant to audiences encountering it decades after its release.

Unlike many contemporary romantic comedies built around elaborate misunderstandings, When Harry Met Sally draws much of its humour from recognisable conversations about dating, friendship, commitment and the fear of rejection.

The supporting performances from Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby add another perspective on relationships, providing an entertaining contrast to Harry and Sally’s complicated romance.

The film is also remembered for its famous restaurant scene at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, which concludes with the unforgettable line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

Rob Reiner’s Reflections Add New Meaning to the Film’s Legacy

Interest in the film also carries particular significance following director Rob Reiner’s death in December 2025.

In March 2026, the US Library of Congress published an interview originally conducted with Reiner in 2022, revealing additional details about the creation of the romantic comedy.

Reiner explained that his experiences with relationships and divorce inspired the original concept, which developed through conversations with screenwriter Nora Ephron.

The filmmaker also revealed that the romantic ending audiences know today was not originally planned.

His initial version would have seen Harry and Sally reconnect years later before going their separate ways. However, Reiner’s developing relationship with his future wife, Michele, during production influenced his decision to change the ending.

Looking back on the film’s reception, Reiner described its impact on audiences as making it “an American aphrodisiac, a cinematic aphrodisiac.”

The Library of Congress added When Harry Met Sally to the National Film Registry in 2022, recognising its cultural and historical significance.

For today’s audiences, the film offers more than nostalgia. Its exploration of friendship developing into romance, the difficulty of recognising genuine affection and the uncertainty surrounding relationships continues to connect with viewers.

Its return to streaming and the upcoming London screening provide another opportunity for audiences to rediscover the performances, humour and enduring appeal of one of cinema’s most recognisable romantic comedies.

With a new generation discovering Harry and Sally’s story, the central question posed by the film remains as compelling as it was in 1989: can two people remain just friends when their feelings begin to change?
